Kelly Rowland seizes her long overdue moment with her third solo album Here I Am.
The Destiny’s Child diva sticks mostly to her R&B roots on the 10-track standard edition, but doesn’t abandon her dance fans with the David Guetta-produced “Commander” and RedOne-helmed “Down for Whatever.” A who’s who of top hitmakers including Tricky Stewart, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Jim Jonsin, and The Runners round out the lineup, while Big Sean, Rico Love, Lil Playy, and Lil Wayne go to bat for Ms.Kelly.
Kelly displays confidence in her self-worth with a few songs that should compel you to press replay. One in particular is her chart-topping single “Motivation,” featuring Lil Wayne, which proves that she has the potential to fully carry herself as a solo artist.
The sexy vocalist struts her stuff on the radio friendly track “Lay It On Me” featuring up-n-coming artist Big Sean. While showing she’s bold in her infatuation with herself on the mid-tempo track “Feeling Me Right Now”, claiming she can escort herself home without the presence of a man after a night out at the club. She sings on the piano-driven track, “I fell in love in the club tonight/I’m so feelin’ me right now/I wanna take her home, take her home/’cause I know I’ll love her right.”
The “Feeling Me” track, along with “Keep It Between Us” are both solid, but the “All of the Night” featuring Rico Love, and “Turn It Up,” fit Rowland’s strong and likable voice. “Commander,” a collaboration with French producer David Guetta, is a sequel of sorts to their ’09 hit, “When Love Takes Over,” the dance-floor powerhouse that changed the course of Rowland’s moribund career. “Commander” was a big hit in Europe and is considered a girl-power anthem. Another version of the song more suited for the U.S was remixed by the up in coming production duo, J&S Vibes (Sir Los & Jasdeep). Although the track will not appear on the Here I Am album. It will be on the Sir Los forth coming LP “Sir Los presents…The Remix Album”.
“Here I Am” is without question Kelly’s crowning get-it-girl moment. She’s finally hitting her stride as a solo artist now—and stepping out from the shadows of you-know-who at the same time.
